View Full Version : Hard drive crashed, can I install a new one?

I have an IBM Netvista (1.6 P4, XP Home SP2) and yesterday my hard drive
crashed.

I started getting "1962: No operating system installed" on startup. I
opened up the case and the hard drive was beeping like crazy.

I loaded a Windows disc it said that no HD was installed.

I tried everything. Replacing the IDE cables, changing jumpers, running a
Boot Disk, but nothing worked.

My question: Would it be possible to go out and buy a new HD and a new XP
OS Disc and install them into the system? (This PC is actually my mom's and
since I'm used to my own home-built system, I want to make sure that such a
thing can be done with a name brand PC).

Thanks.

No problem. Don't you have a recovery CD with the OS on it?

No, I don't. IBM did one of those "the recovery files are pre-installed in
the hard drive". Thus, no CD.

Why should you pay for Windows XP twice?

Because they didn't backup the hard drive with the installation
software!

But, I believe, IBM will sell you an install CD. I know Dell and HP do
with systems that have the restore files on the hard drive.

one problem i could foresee would be if the bios did not support the size of the
new hd.
i'd check the user's manual (for the max size) +/- call ibm (especially if this
is < 3 years old +/- warranty) they might even send you a recovery cd...

another thing would be the various drivers... i guess they were preInstalled as
well as the os?

finally, if you do manage to get a rpl cd from ibm, make sure that it will work
with the new hd (sizeWise)
