Long delay before memory check

Thank you for the responses.
Using the various suggestions, I did determine the cause of the delay.
For some reason, an additional hard drive (through a USB connection) was
powered up, and thus participated during the boot process. After I
powered it down, the delay disappeared.

One thing that might help solve this even if the USB drive is
connected would be to disable booting from USB in your BIOS. I know
that if I plug any sort of mass storage device into my USB ports the
computer will, by default, try to boot from that device (even if it's
totally blank!) and hang for some time. Telling the BIOS to not boot
from USB solved the issue easily enough.
