Hello,
I'm sorry if this has been discussed earlier but surprisingly I couldn't
find much information regarding this issue.
We've been using BMC SQL-BackTrack for years. We're in the process of
replacing our Sun Solaris 2.6 server running 8i by two smaller Sun
Solaris 9 servers running 10g RAC and found that the license for SQL-BT
was too high to consider still using it.
So, we're looking for another product. We backup one ~50 Gb DB online,
to a local filesystem which is later backuped by Networker. We want to
keep it that way : DB --(X tool)--> filesystem --(Networker)--> tape. We
enjoyed the way SQL-BT helps you when restoring, which makes it
"special" compared to competitors, especially because we have no DBA
available fulltime here.
Thank you for you ideas, help and experience,
Olivier

Based on my experience, I would
a) dump backup to tape as a primary target and go to disk. (Then use a
standard backup to tape utility from the disk backup area). The reason,
disk is now relatively inexpensive. 68GB of SCSI disk is a lot cheaper
than any 'Oracle backup to tape' connector.
b) look at the Oracle provided RMAN. In 9i it was a solid product. In
10g it is very good.
