View Full Version : Qkn05Dlx BillPay and Wachovia?

I've been using Quicken (various versions) since 1991 and have been a
Wachovia customer for almost 6 years. I have never used the Bill Pay
options of Quicken or any bank before, and am interested in possibly
getting started with online Bill Pay. I have a few questions though:
1. Are charges involved with Bill Pay (monthly or otherwise)?
2. I believe that Wachovia has their own online Bill Pay program. Am I
better off using theirs or Quicken's or some combination of both (if
that's even possible)?
3. Most of my bills are NOT the same amount each month. How is that
handled vs other bills which ARE the same from month-to-month?
4. How difficult is it to get set-up and started with either Quicken's
or Wachovia's Bill Pay?
I'm just tired of printing checks every couple of days, so I thought
that I'd try this out. I've been reluctant until now because I was
worried about errors being made and having to constantly correct or
tweak what the bank is paying. But I see that a lot of folks pay their
bills online now, and are happy doing it.
I'm especially interested in hearing from Wachovia customers who use
Bill Pay (with or without Quicken).
Thanks!

It probably depends on your bank. Some bundle it together if you meet certain
balances, have a loan/mortgage, etc..
Comparison Chart:

Specific accounts

Looks to be free with a note "Normal bank fees may apply to linked accounts. "
So you'll need to check it out with them.

First, DO NOT USE QUICKENS SERVICES! Use ONLY YOUR BANKS services. Dont support
any more greed than you have to with Intuit. Your better off using your BANKS
OWN services.
3. Most of my bills are NOT the same amount each month. How is thathandled vs other bills which ARE the same from month-to-month?
You have a number of options to set up various bill payments:
1) Check to see if your electric, gas, phone, Dish, etc. will set up EFT or
Electronic Fund Transfer or AutoPay. You have to pay these every month, so you
may as well sign up for them to be automatically paid each month. Normally you
need to fill out a form and send in a voided check to verify RTN & account
numbers.
2) If having bills deducted automatically is not for you then you can just set
up the accounts in Quicken as online Payees and then enter the amount each month
to send, then manually send the online payment.
3) Lastly, for bills that are the same, but you don't want to use auto pay you
can setup ONLINE REPEATING PAYMENTS. These will occur every month, every quarter
etc. for the amount you specify. They will CONTINUE to be paid till YOU STOP
THEM.
4. How difficult is it to get set-up and started with either Quicken'sor Wachovia's Bill Pay?
I've used online banking since Managing Your Money supported Checkfree with like
V9.0 in the early 90's. My bank at the time then moved to their own service and
needed Quicken to use it. I've been stuck with Quicken since then as I only
consider banks that do their own services for direct online bill pay and online
banking as true online banking/bill pay. I don't use any web sites for "web
banking/bill pay." If the bank can not do it directly then its not the bank to
use.
Once you sign up with your bank they will send you a User ID, Password and a
PIN. Choose bank in Quicken, enter the above info, and associate it with the
correct account in Quicken and your on your way.
I'm just tired of printing checks every couple of days, so I thoughtthat I'd try this out. I've been reluctant until now because I wasworried about errors being made and having to constantly correct ortweak what the bank is paying. But I see that a lot of folks pay theirbills online now, and are happy doing it.
I've made NO ADJUSTMENTS to my online accounts in years. I've never had a
problem with the online baking & bill pay via the bank since I've used it. This
is the only reason I continue on with Quicken as its the only program that works
with my bank, which is not some slouch local or regional bank, and many banks to
do online banking/bill pay. Most of the other local/regional banks you need to
manually access a web site to get the info.
I would't have it any other way. I don't have to worry did I pay the Dish bill,
did I pay the electric, its done. Automatically for all my bills. I just don't
have time to deal with such trivial matters as monthly bills for phone, etc.
every month.

Paying bills through Wachovia works fine with Quicken.
To answer your questions:
1. I don't get any billpay charges.
2. I like using Quicken although I am signed up for Wachovia's website
billpay in case of emergencies (away from home w/out notebook,
notebook crashes or breaks and has to be reloaded or repaired, etc.).
3. When I get bills in the mail, I just open Quicken, enter the amount
(& payee info the first time) with the date to be paid by, transmit it
and forget it.
4. Not hard.
Looking at my register, I've been paying bills this way since July
1996 first with Corestates which was bought out by First Union which
was bought out/merged with Wachovia. If I was having a recurring
problem, I would have changed either the bank or the method by now.
As always, YMMV.

Sounds good to me. I'll give it a try.
Thanks to both of you for your informative replies.
