Hello group,
After the first of the year I tried downloading my bank's checking account
data into Quicken Basic 2002. It looked like the data was trying to download
but all I got was a dialog box that appeared very briefly (too quick to even
see what it was) but there was no data. This may have taken place around a
Windows XP auto update but I'm not entirely sure. I thought it might be the
2002 version because of a recent message from Intuit about the 2002
version's life fading, so I upgraded to 2005 basic. The problem still
existed. I've wiped out both versions completely multiple times. Tried
installing it to a new folder in windows, tried starting windows in safe
mode w/networking, called Intuit's Quicken help chat (an experience).
Removed all security (Zonealarm Pro), virus protection (Symantec), AdAware,
Spybot etc I just can't seem to find a conflicting program, .dll's, missing
file etc. I can download bank data as a CSV but not directly into the
Quicken register.

Any help would be deeply appreciated.

Just a long shot: you could try deleting your temporary Internet
files. At least one poster found that when the temporary
internet file folder got too full, Quicken had problems
retrieving downloaded data.

Also, is this a web-connect download? If so, have you tried
saving the downloaded data to a disk file, then "importing" it
into Quicken?

John,
Quicken's chat help suggested same thing. I deleted all files, cookies etc.
This is a web connect downloading procedure. My register says the last
download was on 12/16/2004. When I try to download no data appears and the
last download note date doesn't change. I've also tried to save download to
a web connect file for importing later. The download asks me to name the
file, but it doesn't appear in the folder I know I'm downloading to. Right
now all I can do is download to a CSV and clear the register manually.

Have you tried disabling the account for online access? Try
that (and don't try to re-enable the account), then initiate
another download. If the download succeeds, it will ask you
whether to download to an existing account, and if so, which
one. Also if this works, I think it is possible you will get
more transactions than just the ones you are missing (though
that possibility probably decreases as each day goes by). Make
a backup before you start and if you don't like any of the
results, just revert to the backup.

John,
I backed up my file. De-activated the online banking download option. Went
to my bank's site and started download. I do have the option set to select
whether to download into program or save to import later. Neither option
works. I tried to download into program, but it didn't ask which file to do
it in. I then tried downloading to import later, it did come up with a
dialog box that I needed to name the file and save to a folder, which I did,
but when I tried to import the file it wasn't in the folder I downloaded to.
I'm completely baffled.

John,
Please keep in mind that I had the same problem with the old Quicken Basic
2002 before upgrading to 2005. I'm not sure if any program additions or
WinXp upgrades caused this or I'm missing something that Quicken needs from
windows that disabled this function.

Ok, I will try to keep that in mind. I'm trying to find the
link between your reported problem and what I think are similar
ones, so I can't guarantee the process will be simple or that it
will find an answer.

There was one problem that sounded just like yours, but it was
caused by having the Archive flag unset on a Quicken executable
file (a dll in this instance). Since you have upgraded and done
reinstalls, that does not seem like it would explain your
problem, since I assume that installs leave the archive flag
set.

So the only other approach I can think of is to purge one of the
files in your Quicken fileset, and let Quicken rebuild it, and
see if that helps. Again, backup first and be prepared to
checkout the results closely; you may lose some data relating to
online access and be required to re-enter it. This is pretty
much a long shot but it has "fixed" a couple of problems in the
past.

Backup.

Close Quicken. Delete QDATA.QEL. Open Quicken (it will rebuild
the .qel file). Do what it takes to download the data you have
not been getting. Carefully checkout all accounts that should
have online access to see that they work as they should.

If this does not help, I am about tapped out. I have installed
all the upgrades to Windows XP on my pc as I have used Q2002 on
a regular basis, and as I have tested Q2004 and Q2005 ... I have
never experienced what you are seeing.

Do you have Quicken and/or its data in an NTFS partition? There
have been some Quicken access problems reported by folks with
NTFS partitions, that do not seem to have been experienced by
those who do not have NTFS (I am one of those who does not).

After downloading the file to save on disk, can the OP visually (using
Explorer) open the specified location and verify that the file was indeed
saved where he thinks it was?
