View Full Version : Balance Confusion

I have an investment account that appears to show two different total
number of shares.
Initially the Transaction tab showed 430.561 (which is the correct
current balance as per the financial statement).
The Summary tab however showed 429.104.
When I did the "Compare to Portfolio" a Placeholder entry of 1.457 was
added which corrected the Summary tab to the right number of shares and
the right total current value.
But the Transaction tab now shows the Placeholder entry - and the
confusing thing is that it now shows a running number of shares total
of 432.018 (1.457 too high). What I do not understand is that the
432.018 is not being used in the value calculation on the summary tab.
I have been through every transaction and they are all there so I am
unable to correct the Placeholder - there are no missing transactions.
Any idea on what I am missing?
BTW - Quicken 2004 Deluxe
Thanks much

Well - It is now fixed but I do not understand what happened.
Even thought the Transaction List showed a running total higher than
actual (with the Placeholder) I decided to follow the Enter Price link
for the Placeholder entry. That took me to a different view of
transactions I had not seen before. I went through the list and sure
enough found a missing transaction of 1.457 shares. So I added the
entry and went back to the main Transaction List tab. The running
share total was still too high so I scrolled the list of transations
from this view and found that what I had just entered was a duplicate -
the transaction had been entered before. So I deleted one of the two
(not sure if it was the one I just entered or the previous one) and
sure enough everything balances correctly.
Any explanations? The only thing I found odd is that the Description
Field on one of the duplicate entries was blank.
Could it have been that the running total was a combination of the
"named" investment PLUS the "unamed" investment? So that when I
compared to the Online Account it did not recognize the unamed
investment number of shares? This Quicken account should be of a
single investment.
I think I have answered my own question................
Thanks
