Is there no way to get the totals to show at the bottom of the debit and
credit columns? Seems like a pretty basic function for a journal entry...

Have no clue which version you are using.
Column totals for journal entries are at the bottom of the journal entry
screen in the version I use, QB 2003 Contractor edition.
