View Full Version : Laserjet 5 Enhanced Driver ?
I have a problem with my Laserjet 5 when using the "Standard" driver.
It does some odd stuff such as failing to print graphics from MS-Word
and printing boxes around things that don't need boxes around them in
MS Powerpoint.
I cured these problems back when I was using WIN98 by installing the
Laserjet 5 "Enhanced" driver. However, this driver does not seem to be
available for Win2K. (The printer hangs off a win2K server and runs
from win2K workstations.
Any idea where I can get the enhanced driver for win2K? I tried all
the packages at HP.com for win2K but they all include only the
standard driver.

you will find what you're looking for here:

There is no enhanced driver available anywhere and the packages mentioned
are the most recent.
Also, if your printer only has the standard memory equipment, make sure
that you switch to 300dpi when printing graphics and such. It'll be best if
you make this setting as Administrator on the server in both the printer's
properties and the documents default settings. Set security for everyone
can print, creators and owners to manage jobs and Administrators to full
control. Then, no one will be able to change the settings you made except
for his own print job (i.e. no permanent changes allowed).

Thanks, I did find those.

Hmmm. I know the enhanced driver fixed this under win98. But I also
know I had it working on win2K for quite a while too. I seem to recall
that it was easier in win2K than it was in win98 but it's been a long
time since I did the initial setup. Perhaps the win2K supplied driver
would be better than whatever I've got layered over it direct from HP.
Also, if your printer only has the standard memory equipment, make surethat you switch to 300dpi when printing graphics and such.
I'll try this. I don't think it will help with the current problem
because it even shows up in Print Preview on the client.
Any other advice appreciated,
Bob

Bob,
Insufficient memory in the printer is a very likely cause of odd effects when
printing. How much memory in the computer? If you'd like to buy a 64MB kit of
guaranteed compatible memory, please get in touch. I am running an LJ5 with
64MB and no problems ever... Ben Myers ben_myers@charter.net

I have quite a lot of memory in there. I'd have to check but it's over
32mb. I put a bunch of retired SIMMS in there a while back. It really
seems to be a software issue for a couple of reasons: First, I can't
see the drawn lines in Word in Print Preview. Second, I cured this in
the past using the "enhanced" driver. I had both the standard and
enhanced drivers installed on the systems and I could switch back and
forth between them - one would work correctly, one would not.

If the memory is not at the advertised maximum of 64MB, kick it up a bit.
Especially with the printing of extremely complicated images from a browser, the
memory gets gobbled up.
All I can suggest is to download and test the TWO drivers shown on the HP web
site:

We are talking PCL 5e, right? Not PostScript, which I find lots better for lots
of reasons, one of which is that Adobe Acrobat documents print accurately with a
PostScript printer... Ben Myers

Yep. I don't use PS on this printer.
As a test, I went to an old config PC that uses this same server &
printer. Should be the same...but it works OK. So I figured it had
an older driver that was still working. Then I built a new system
(needed it rebuilt anyway) which has identical hardware and it
worked fine too. These are all routing through the same server
and allegedly should be pulling the exact same driver files at
install time. Very strange.
Do you know how to fully remove the printer/driver installation ?
I'm thinking that if I could truly remove all the HP driver files
from the "bad" machine, I could reinstall from the server at it
would work.

for one thing, I'd print out the test pages that come with Windows XP on
all systems in question. Then, compare the driver file versions that are
printed aside of the file names. Are there any striking differences?
