filtering sales orders to exclude invoiced items

I use a report of sales orders to figure out my production needs a
month or two in advance and can't seem to figure out how to filter the
report to include only the items that have not yet been invoiced.
There is no field within the sales order that I can sort on that
indicates item status. Yet, there are clearly fields in the sales
order that indicate the quantity of each item that has been invoiced.
Any ideas as to how to capture that information?
