View Full Version : Return of Capital

I was notified by my FI that part of the dividends of one of the securities
in my account were reclassified as "return of capital". I went back to those
transactions and changed them accordingly. Now I notice that if I print a
report, such as "Income vs. Expenses", these amounts show up as
"uncategorized". I looked at the category list an saw that there was no
"Return of Capital" on the list, so I added it. It still shows on the report
as "uncategorized". I added it to the list both as "Return of Capital" and
"RtrnCap", marked both as having tax implications and not, and nothing seems
to make any difference.
Not a huge problem, but has anyone else had this problem or have a solution?

It sounds like the type of account you placed this in is other than type
"Investment".

No, it's an Investment Account, and has numerous other dividends, interest,
capital gains, etc. all reporting correctly.

Oh, it's an Action not a Category... so you were just looking in the
wrong list.

Yes, it's an Action, like Div is an Action that flows to _DivInc or
_DivIncTaxFree, depending upon how the security is classified, and the
amount shows up in the report under that category. It just seems like the
amount of a Return of Capital should flow to a category so that it can show
up on a report that way instead of being "uncategorized".

Categories aren't really a priority item with investment transactions.
As you can probably see in your version of Quicken, there is no place to
even enter a category in the Return of Capital type of transaction...
therefore in these type of cases, "no category" appears to be a feature.

Some people would call this sloppy bookkeeping. Interesting that you
see it as a "feature".

I was not promoting this as a positive feature (now that would be possibly
interesting), just pointed out that it IS software feature of Quicken...
feature ----> as in no way around it VS option [not all that interesting] -- Vic Roberts Replace xxx with vdr in e-mail address.

Sorry. I usually associated the word "feature" with something
desirable. I see that at least one version of Webster's does not agree
with me.
