I'm trying to remove an xref'd drawing (that is xref'ed as an
attachment, not an overlay)from another drawing. When I open the Xref
manager and select the drawing to remove, then click on the "detach"
button, I get a message that says "Unable to detach. Multiple
references detected"
Any help on getting this xref'ed dwg from another would be hugely
appreciated.

Did you check the Autodesk KB?

That means that it's been inserted at more than one place in your drawing.
Just ERASE the one you don't want.
