Hi Guys,

I need some advise:

I'am looking for a version control tool that runs on XP clients and the
repository should be on a Novell file server. It should manege binary files
as well as MS-office docs

After Googeling I found CVS, WinCVS, Subversion, etc. but to me it seems
that all of these need a Unix/Linux server for the repository. In our
network there is no Unix/Linux machine to run the tool.

The tool must have a GUI interface, because the users wont accept a command
line interface. And it must be multi-user.

Can you help me please with some advise wich tools I should investigate?

Thanks in advance,

Peter

Peter:

Both Subversion and CVS are good OSS which both work on a Windows only
platfrom. The trick will be to build the tools for Windows or find the
binary files.

Also, there are many non-OSS solutions as well. Searching for
'"Source Control" Tool' or '"Version Control" Tool'
may provide you with more hits.

There are many solutions out there which should easily fit within your
environment. For example, my company produces SourceGear Vault
(www.sourcegear.com) - a Windows .Net based version control tool which
uses a SQL Server back end.

Yes.

Although if he cannot have a real server [1], that narrows it down.

For example, if I recall correctly, you cannot share a CVS repository
through a mere remote file system -- without risking data loss.

[1] The only server he mentions a file server, which I assume only serves
file systems.

Depending on your budgetary constraints, you should consider Perforce
(www.perforce.com). It's not to badly priced and does what it does
very well and their support is usually quite good.
