View Full Version : 2006 Download vs CD?

Hello,

I was a lapsed Quicken user. I gave up on Q back around version...
Hmmm... 2000? I recently decided to get with the program again and
purchased the download of 2006 Permire from the Quicken site. The
price was the same and I didn't see anything about there being
differences between the two. Once I had the link and saw that it was
only a 41M download, I got concerned about getting all the content that
was on the CD. (I had guessed that the download would be 400+M.)

Anyway, since Quicken support is only M - F, I figured I'd ask here.
Anyone else here buy the download? Are they following up with a
shipped version? (They did ask for my shipping address, but that might
just be part of their normal web flow.) Beyond not getting any video
help files, is there anything else missing?

Thanks,
pete

There is at least one potentially useful tool you will be
missing if you do not get the CD; it is a tool for complete
removal of a corrupted Quicken installation, including all
registry entries.

Personally, I would never purchase software without the CD if
one were available.

one go about getting a CD to replace the download (aside from paying
another $70)?

....and as a side note, does anyone know where on the Quicken site it
mentions the differences between the two delivery options?

I am reasonably certain you do not have to pay full price again
to get it on CD.

One possibility is to take advantage of the 60 money back
guarantee policy, "return" your downloaded version, then
purchase the CD ... if you haven't already owned the download
for 60 days.

Also, I just read the other day that if you lose your CD, you
can buy a replacement for $15 + shipping/handling ... so I think
you should not have to worry about paying any more than that.

I took a brief look around the Intuit site but couldn't find any
other useful information; you might have better luck, or you can
just call their sales department.
...and as a side note, does anyone know where on the Quicken site it mentions the differences between the two delivery options? Thanks, pete

Thanks. I should look into that. I'll have to wait until Monday to
call them about it though. Thanks again.

I always recommend that people get the boxed set. You can get it at multiple
places for the same or, more likely, less as from Intuit. If you use Turbo
Tax, I'd wait for a couple of weeks or so. There are usually some very good
deals (Staples usually has, IMNSHO, the best one) where you can get Q for a
lot less.

I can't imagine why Intuit would follow up with a boxed set. That's the
whole point of a download. It saves them the cost of the packaging.

I suspect that he download is a "starter" app that will download the full
package.

To avoid even that charge, be sure to burn the download before proceeding...

Well, the thing is, I got "Quicken 2006 Premier". They did nothing to
mark the download version as anything different from the boxed set.
They even mentioned that the download would be big, thus implying that
the download would be around CD size. These days, 41M is not big.
Regardless of the price it's offered at, to offer the same package,
labeled the same way, at the same price, without any indication that
one's different from the other beyond the media you get (plastic disc
vs bits) seems a little wrong to me. I don't think they're trying to
screw the customer as, AFAICT, they don't gain anything from this. I
just think it was an oversite on their behalf.

That said, I'm still annoyed. I want to "return" the download. I'll
go to one of my local computer stores (or Staples, thank you, Hank) and
pick up the plastic disc version.

Actually, they even say it's the same as the boxed version.

As far as I know, this is the first year the uninstall tool has
been available to users at all. And when asked directly if it
was available for downloaders, Intuit said, "no", but they were
looking into making it available to them.
