I was working on company in multiuser mode and all of a sudden all data was
gone. The company file went blank! Used to be 15 MB now it's 0 kb.
Unfortunatley, last backup was months ago:(

Anyone else had this experiece?

Although it is not out of the realm of possibilities, I can't think of
anything in QuickBooks that would produce the result you speak of. I would
look at other reasons as the source of this problem. Is this data file
located on a network drive, and where you disconnected? Since it is
multi-user, I assume the others have access to the file, did they delete or
move it? Maybe the computer on which the file resides is having issues,
maybe it would be worth doing some diagnostics on that computer.

Good luck

Why on earth would you egnore all the reminders to back up QB?

There was another user with access to my company file on another machine. If
such user deleted file while it was still open on my machine, wouldn't file
be gone completely instead of remaining at 0 kb?

Thanks

P.S. We thought file was being auto-saved daily.

If the data file was open from your machine, the file-lock
should have prevented anyone else from deleting the file.
This sounds more like a "malicious incident" than an
"accident."

Dig deeper. Maybe the file got moved somewhere.

More than likely what happened is your power blinked for a split
second, your file was lost.

I would suggest several things:
1. Backup backup backup. When I backup I backup to another computer
on the network, 3 zip disks, and 3 USB drives. How much is worth it
to back up? Just ask yourself how long would it take me to reconstuct
this file from scratch.
2. You may want to consider getting a UPS system. If you loose power
the UPS keeps the system running and gives you time to shut down.
3. Do you have a surge supressor? If not get one.
4. If you have the drive space put a copy or two in another directory
on your computer. You never know when you'll loose electricity.
Just ask the people in
California/Florida/Texas/Louisiana/Mississippi/Alabama.

But my money would be on you lost power for a split second.

See my previous post. Probably power related.

Very common among computer users. Yeah it should have been
done. But here the fact remains it wasn't. Is it worth it to do a
backup? Just ask yourself how long would it take to reconstruct the
file from scratch?

I'm older than dirt, i've been using computers for lots of
years. Yes you tell 100 users to back up their files
and 99 of them won't do it anyways.

(What OS are you using? Windows XP has a feature
that lets you go back in time. Have you tried that if
you have XP?)

Maybe not. Windows may not have updated the screen automatically.
It's possible that if you updated the screen to do a fresh directory
it would show no quickbooks file.

(One thing to check is see if any users
copied the file to another directory.
Maybe you'll luck out and someone
copied the file/moved the file/etc.)

P.S. We thought file was being auto-saved daily.
Do you have a file with the extension .QBB? If so that is a backup
file.

(I don't use Quick books backup, I just dump the whole file
lock stock and barrel onto my zip disks, USB drives.)

BTW, you can also backup to CD, DVD, or to some online
sites.

Maybe but I would tend to doubt it. More than likely the
OP lost power for a second, and lost the file when the power
went out.

During the California power crisis a few years ago
this happened to alot of users. So much so that
customers were advised get a UPS.

I posted a small batch file some time back that automatically backed up the
QB file every time you closed the program. On every machine. And kept
fifteen generations of the backups.

If you can't find it, I'll post it again (or send you a copy).

I don't either . . . I just XCopy it over to the E: Drive.

"XCopy C:\QuickBooks\*.qbw E:\ /E /H /K /I /C /R /X /Y"

It takes a whopping 2 seconds

Then every once in a while I copy them to a CD

Thanks all for suggestions and comments.
There is a surge protector, and yes, we did notice the lights blink for a
split, but earlier in day.
We went through the QB Indian support and they had me search for .qbw, .qbb,
and could not find a more recent file. They said they would not be able to
restore the main file at 0 kb. I find it strange that a file would sizzle
out like that just because of a possible spike. A test to do would be to
flip the on-off switch right away on the power stripp, see what happends to
dummy qbw. I had tried the system restore before too; and just before this
happened, I was showing someone how to backup to cd via drag and drop, then
since the file was in use, it prompted for file to be closed first, we went
to close but it was in multi-user and it asked to close that user, but the
other machine that regularly uses the file was not on, there was another
that had access, but does use it, so there could be something there...
anyway, we skipped the QBW file and continued with backup - and continued to
work on file ok.
Upon changing from reconciling to entering a check the magic act occured:(

My understanding is it happened to lots of people in California when
they had their prower problems.

Between spikes/power loss/etc. lots of people lost files so some
software companies were encouraging users to get UPSs and to
take other measturers.

Bear in mind we now know that when California had it's power crisis
that Enron was purposly manipulating things. They ddin't care
what it did to prices, to customers equipment or their files.
