I am having a problem gaining access to my webcam, using a simple
webcam server, Simplecam, available from www.download.com. Simplecam
works by using a Java applet to stream JPG images into a video stream.
Works quite nicely when it works.
Here are the details:
I have a DSL connection using a Westell Versalink 327 gateway and
wireless router. I have three pc's behind the firewall with static
addresses, plus a Linksys wireless web cam that operates on it's own IP
address independently of any of the pc's. That web cam uses port 1024,
which has been forwarded through the Westell firewall and works
perfectly, whether accessed from inside my network or from an external
location.
Now, I have attached a second cam, Creative web cam, to one of the pc's
via its USB connection. That camera has been set to use port 1025 and
this port has also been forwarded through Westell's firewall. (I might
add that I have tested the 1025 port by an external port checker, and
it is open and accessible from outside the network.) I also configured
McAfee's software firewall on that pc to allow port 1025 connections.
Now, the problem remains that the camera attached to that pc and port
1025 is accessible from any machine inside my network, but is
inaccessible from any external machine (four have been tested from
different friends in different cities). When attempting to access via
an outside location, the web page is found, begins to load, the web
page header, "My Webcam," appears, the java box appears, but instead of
opening the camera, the java applet stalls and just shows the java logo
or a red "X" in the upper left corner of the box. I have also tried
this setup with the Westell firewall completely turned off and the
McAfee unloaded, as well. The results have not varied.
I have wondered whether some settings in Internet Explorer on the
external accessing pc might be the culprit, but in experimenting with
different IE security levels and advanced settings I have not
discovered any solution.
If anyone has further ideas on the solution to this problem, I would
welcome your advice.
Thanks.
