Hello,

I opened my Quickbooks 99 Pro today and it took a long time to open my
company file for some reason. Once opened, I noticed my customer
listing stopped after the letter "R" and didn't have anything past that.
Whats weird is, the last invoice I put in there is there, and the
customers name starts with a "T". So, as soon as I click on anything,
Quickbooks wants me to add this customer to the customer listing
because, as I said, nothing is there past "R". The invoice is there
though and the customers name is spelled out completely, its just not in
the customer listing. I haven't looked any further within quickbooks
because I'm afraid to. Funny thing happened too, I attempted to make a
backup copy of my data file just my dragging it in Windows Explorer to
another drive, and it gave me an error message like this...

"Cannot Copy"
"Cyclic redundancy check"

Then my computer locked up for about a minute and then worked.
I tried Windows XP system restore and went backwards to this past
Saturday and that did nothing.

I'm a computer person and spend the last 2 weeks getting rid of virus
for other people, but I've always had mine protected much better than
most although I'm sure its possible I could have gotten a virus, what do
you think? I've ran full system scans twice in the last two weeks but I
haven't ran one for 4 or 5 days now. Norton is working in the
background though.

Whats up with all this? Is this a corrupt data file or a virus or what?
What can I do to attempt to fix it? I have a backup unfortunately its
about 2 weeks old which means I'll have to spend a day updating it.
Please help if you can.

Aloha

Jim

Run the file verify and then restore a backup will be made so go ahead
and see if this helps you.

Step #1. Run an AV check right now. Make sure your AV is
updated, you may want to use another machine to get the
update.

Well, I ran the verify and that fixed the file so I can get into it but
now my invoices for the last month and a half are missing. It gave me my
missing address book back but now invoices from all of August and part
of July are gone! Damn....

Does anyone know how I can restore this???

I tell ya, I am an advocate of backing up and as it is, I turned off my
backup software about a month ago because I was having trouble with it
backing up my outlook data file and I hadn't fixed it yet so I wasn't
backing up anything.......GRRRRRR....

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Those items may well be gone. When you run a rebuild the file is repaired and data loss can occur in the process. You could backup and rebuild again, but only one more time to see if the data is restorable.

If you have a backup before the rebuild you can get into that has the transactions you may be able to create a report in Excel that you could reformat into a file QB will import.

Backup is critical and never should be put off until later. The NT backup that comes with W2000 and XP Professional always works and can be automated.
