You might wnt to join the corel.* newsgroups.

If your current news server(s) shouldn't carry them, use Corel's:
cnews.corel.com.

What version of Corel DRAW (Suite) are you using?

And, what kind of help do you want for TRACE?

I thought this was a Corel newsgroup?
If their are others, I would like to know about them.
Thanks,
Lynn

Hi ah

I am using CorelDRAW 11.

What I want to end up with is a plot file or HPGL Plotter file which I can
use on an engraver, I understand that I will need to edit the image in
CorelDRAW/CorelPHOTO-PAINT and then use CorelTRACE to generate the file.

I am reasonably skilled on Adobe Photoshop so it is not easy making the
transition to Corel, one other problem is there is a serious lack of
documentation about CorelTRACE as well.

Thanks
Will

I am reasonably skilled on Adobe Photoshop so it is not easy making the transition to Corel, one other problem is there is a serious lack of documentation about CorelTRACE as well.

I have no real experience in that particular workflow (I do mostly Screen/Web
work), but it shouldn't take too much effort to go from point A to point B.

Photo-Paint (PP) is comparable to PS--though it's like shopping at IGA if you're
used to Kroger: basically the same products, just that the shelving/arrangement
is different.

What I would do would be to prepare for myself a simple, distinct piece of
raster: if you're scanning a 24bit+ RGB image, Trace is going to give you a
/lot/ of vector material, in the end.

One thing I find necessary is to limit the color-range of the pre-scan raster to
< 30 colors (less /is/ better)--if I'm doing some serious post-scan
modifications to the vector output, having to sort-through/keep-track-of more
than that is a egregious process. If you can get the pre-scan raster into a 4-8
color greyscale/paletted form (or, ideally, 1-bit w/2colors), you can save a
_lot_ of time ;-)

I usually use the Advanced Outline method in Trace (so I can define more
variables), but you'll just have to experiment a bit to see what method produces
what results: at the left side of the screen (in the Tool Box), there are
Method buttons.

Also in the Tool Box is a button (should be at the bottom of it) that looks like
a pencil in a rectangle: this is the Draw Trace Block tool, and is of great
help when you want to test a trace Method. Select the tool, and use it to draw
a small rectangle somewhere in the image you're tracing: when you do your
trace, only the content withing the area(s) of that selected block(s) will be
traced (test your Method/Settings on a small area so you don't have to wait too
long for a Big Trace to complete). You can have many Trace Blocks, but the
trace will be limited to only them if they are selected.

Of course, there are times when it's easier to just Import the raster into DRAW,
and manually trace the bitmap . . . but, that's not something I can 'tell' you.

Then you can clean-up the vector object(s) in DRAW, and Export to HPGL (or
whatever).

Try experimenting a bit more, and come-on back with some details we can resolve :-)

Put your "fine print" filter on. :-)

This news:comp.graphics.apps.corel is /a/ group about graphics software,
alongside groups about other makes.
The corel.* is a hierarchy (bundle) of more specific newsgroups, to my
knowledge monitored by Corel. I have seen a few binary attachments there,
little screen shots to clarify a problem or solution.

(More software makers have dedicated hierarchies of newsgroups. These may be
carried worldwide (Macromedia) or merely on their own servers (JASC), I
think. So Corel's news server is cnews.corel.com or cnews.corel.ca.)
