Using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software has introduced new technical,
management, and operational challenges. The International Conference on
COTS-Based Software Systems (ICCBSS) provides a key source for finding
solutions to these challenges. ICCBSS is the first conference to showcase
best practices and promising research directions for creating and maintaining
systems that incorporate COTS software products. At ICCBSS, researchers and
practitioners from around the world gather to exchange ideas and results.
Past conferences have attracted software professionals from leading industry,
government, and university organizations. This year's event continues that
tradition.
Conference Topics:
The theme for ICCBSS 2004, Matching Solutions to Problems, emphasizes
emerging research and practical solutions that respond to problems faced
by developers of and solution providers for COTS-based software systems.
Actively explore selected topics in greater depth at optional pre-conference
workshops: COTS Terminology and Categories or Incorporating COTS into Software
Systems: Tools and Techniques. The following thought leaders will set the
tone for the conference: Chair: Barry Boehm, Univ. of Southern California
Keynote speakers:
. David Carr, Senior Technology Analyst, Baseline Magazine, will share
analysis of commercial and government projects for their critical success
factors in "Integration Successes and Flops: The Baseline Magazine
Perspective."
. Douglas Schmidt, Vanderbilt University, will discuss his university and
DARPA research on current and future middleware usage problems, along
with emerging solutions, in "Advances in COTS Middleware for Distributed
Real-time Systems."
. Patricia Oberndorf, Director, Dynamic Systems Program, Software
Engineering Institute, will share her experiences addressing COTS-based
system problems and solutions with large projects and discuss emerging
directions in "COTS-Based Systems: The Road We're On."
The conference will explore defining, building, fielding, and evolving
COTS-based systems through presentations of refereed papers and experience
reports, tutorials, panels, and workshops. Topics include:
. Evaluating COTS products . Integrating COTS-based systems
. Managing COTS-based system projects . Adopting COTS-based approaches
