The version 4.0 of the Application Response Measurement (ARM) standard
developed within the OpenGroup will be finalized shortly
(www.opengroup.org/management/arm/). This standard defines a
C/C++ and Java API for instrumenting (distributed) applications.
Most notably, with this standard prgramming language, process and
host boundaries are not a restriction for transaction and sub-
transaction measurements any more - resulting in a real end-to-end
(business-) transaction measurement. For a detailed description of
the ARM standard please read the document available on the OpenGroup
site.

Together with IBM and HP, we from tang-IT Consulting GmbH have led
the development of this version 4.0 of the ARM standard. We are going
to show our ARM 4.0-based product called *tang-IT ARM* at the
LinuxWorld 2003 exhibition in Frankfurt, Germany from Oct. 27 to 29.

Features at a glance:

* Fully ARM 4.0 (C and Java) compliant
* Modular design (data handling and storage support through plugins)
* Analysis tools providing the metric statistics you need.
* Developer options for custom analysis tools using our C++ interface.
* High resolution timers if available on the platform (nano-second
resolution)
* Ready to ship now.

We would appreciate your visit at LinuxWorld in Germany from 27. to 29.
of October 2003 at our booth A.12 in hall 4.0 or, contact us per

hi,

does anybody know when the new SDK is going to be released?
mark w. johnson (tivoli) told me yesterday that the sdk is ready to be
released but must pass some legal wattles... i don't know how long it
took for the earlier versions to be released...
i want to start a project with ARM (as soon as possible) and don't
know if i should wait for the new sdk or should not mind and just do
it with the "old" ARM 3.0 ...

thanks,
--beatrix

hi beatrix,

well, I don't know how long it will take to solve the legal issues, but
we hope we'll get through this step shortly and the SDK can be released
very soon.

Also I suggest you should wait until ARM 4.0 SDK is available, because
many things have changed from ARM 2.0/3.0 to ARM 4.0 also in the Java
specs! For example, registration of ARM meta data (application and
transaction names) have to be done within the instrumented code. Whereas
in the ARM 3.0 Java spec there was some out-of-band registration of ARM
meta data using UUIDs. This out-of-band registration of meta data isn't
required to be supported by an ARM agent.

Even the SDK isn't available yet, you can download the specification for
C and Java from the Open Group ARM web page at
http://www.opengroup.org/management/arm/ to have a look into the ARM 4.0
C functions and Java interfaces.

If you are interested in a simple tutorial how to use the ARM 4.0 Java
or C interface have a look at our tutorial pages:

Regards,
Stefan
