Does anybody know if Function Point is suitable to measure
System Software?
Our company is developing a DBMS software. For the users
of the product, the primary input interface
is something very much like the Query Analyzer for
Microsoft SQL Server where they will type in SQL
command and the command result, either a result set
or a message showing the outcome of add, update,
delete command.
For this kind of system programming, is it suitable
to use Function Point to count software size?
If it's not suitable, what kind of software sizing
technique is out there?
Can anybody tell me? Any clue will be very much
appreciated.

Try COSMIC FFP 2 method. This is applicable to most application domains.
You can download the manual from
http://www.lrgl.uqam.ca/cosmic-ffp/manual.html . There are examples of
the use of the COSMIC method at
http://www.lrgl.uqam.ca/cosmic-ffp/casestudies/.

have a look at COSMIC-FFP, the 2nd generation of functional size
measurement, at www.cosmicon.com. It deals with layered, peer-to-peer
software etc.
