I have a question with regards to music copyright laws. I have beentold that I cannot copy music from a compact disc to the hard drive ofmy computer. I have only done this with discs that I have purchasedand only do so to listen to the music while I work. The files arenever shared or burnt to other discs (i.e. nobody else has access tomy music). Am I infringing on copyright laws?

You can do so *only* if you use the music on your hard drive for your
own personal use. You can't share it on a P2P network. You can't
send copies to your friends as e-mail attachments. You can't
broadcast it over the Internet or any other means of transmission.
You can't play it for a group of people, such as when having a party.
In other words, it has to be isolated from the rest of the world and
used only by you. If you adhere to that, you are permitted, under
copyright law, to make one copy of ANY copyrighted music work for
BACKUP purposes only. This is one right the music industry doesn't
want you to know and tries their best to conceal from the general
public.

Hope this helps.

I think in the UK you aren't even allowed to make one copy for your own use,
for example, you are not allowed to make a copy of a cd to use in the car.

I think in other countries, you are allowed to make a copy of it is for your
own personal use.

Either way, you are hardly likely to be prosecuted for having copies of
music on your hd
