with norton 2004 you have to input the serial code to activate it.
What happens if I format my drive and need to reinstall it again? Will it
reject it as already having ben registered?

How would Symantec know if I was trying to to do a second (illegal) install
on a second machine? I don't understand how it works.

I don't know how the Norton technology works, but the Microsoft
technology for activation allows reinstallation on the same machine with
no problems. It comes up with a mathematical description of the machine
and sends a code to MS made up of the product key and the machine
description. In a future install, the product key and the machine
description would be the same (or close enough, e.g., you can replace
the hard drive and it will still work), so activation would still succeed.
