Color Report Printing

When I installed Windows XP a couple of years ago, I was forced to upgrade
Quicken (98 I think) to Quicken 2001. I was annoyed to find that this
supposedly upgraded version did not allow me to print reports with negative
numbers in red. They just have minus signs and that makes it difficult to
differentiate the positive and negative numbers. I've been reluctant to
upgrade to subsequent versions of Quicken because Intuit seems unable to
tell me if they have restored the ability to print negative numbers in red
(I've tried sending questions to their customer support). I'm not talking
about the screen (where negative numbers do show in red), but in a printed
report. Can it be done?

Hi Bob.
1. Are you sure you have the print in color box checked on the print dialog
box?
2. I have Quicken 2003 and it prints red for negative if I have above
mentioned box checked.

The only thing I can find in Quicken 2001 is a box that says "use color in
report". It is checked, but this seems only to affect the report when
displayed on the screen, not when it is printed. There is also a "printer
set up" under "file", but that seems to be related more to the actual HP
printer than it is to Quicken. There is a color setting established there
as well However, if you are telling me that you can indeed print reports in
color with Quicken 2003, that will be an inducement for me to upgrade!.

The lack of ability to print in color in Qkn01 was a new "feature."
Color printing was restored in 2002.

Hi Bob.
In my short experience with Q2003, I'd say not to give
much weight to its color printing ability when deciding
whether to upgrade. Yes, it prints in color, but ...!

I've got an HP DeskJet model. I have the normal default
set for quality = "Econofast" (because the work looks pretty
good that way, and takes much less time and ink to do).

In Quicken, the setup choices for report printing leaves a
lot to be desired. It generally shows two mutually exclusive
options: "Print in Color" or "Print in Draft Mode", even
though they are chosen by check-mark rather than bullet.
I'm not quite clear on what the conditions are for being able
to specify printer options, but if you choose Color, the
report is "Normal" quality. If you manage to get to the
printer handler settings to set it for "Econofast", the report
comes out with only black printing, despite what Quicken's
settings were. (That's not true for other applications that print.)

Also it sometimes seems impossible to get more than one
copy of a report for each print job, especially if you're
using a saved report form. So you can't try one copy to
see how it looks, and then after fixing the spacing or
whatever, print multiple copies. That may be necessary
because the Preview feature is not always wysiwyg.

I think the only way to get multiple copies of some reports
is to send it to a spreadsheet. Then you can also save the
report for possible sending via email, which may remove
the need to print it at all. In any event, you only get
black font in the spreadsheet unless you can specify
otherwise in the spreadsheet program itself. (Good luck.)

Couldn't you just create the report, hit control-p (rather than the print
button) to bring up the printer screen, then set your number of copies on the
resulting window? The control-p window also allows you to set printing
preferences.

Ctrl-p does not work in Q03; this shortcut either prints the register
you are in or prints your home screen.
