View Full Version : Data backup

I am relatively new to Quicken (...2002 for Mac OS 9.2 to be
specific). I was moving all my wife's computer files from one iMac to
another today. When she sat down to open our "Quicken Data — Biz" file
on her new (2 yr.-old) iMac, all the bill-paying work she had just
done earlier today was gone.

I went to the "Backup" file, but they didn't have the latest data
either. She's a fairly NON-computer savvy person — even worse than I
— but I can't figure out what she or I might have done. You can't even
quit the app without the file automatically saving itself, right?

So which one of us nuked the data — and how'd we do it? (And of
course, is it recoverable?)

Thanks in advance. — gp

I am not that familiar with 9.2, as I started on Macs with OS X.
But one question: If you open quicken on the Old imac does everything
still work OK?

If so, if everything is OK there, I would INSTALL [or reinstall] quicken
on the "new" machine, Make a BackUp file on the old computer and restore
it on the new one.

"Make a BackUp file on the old computer and restore it on the new
one." This part is not totally clear to me. Just make a file and call
it "Backup"? How do you direct the auto-saves (whatever) to go there?

I think I figured out my mistake (and it's a dumb one). Instead of
making an alias of my Quicken data file and dropping that into the
Apple menu (Just to makeit easily findable to my wife), I drop the
file itself into the Apple menu. That HAS to be wrong, right? And that
probably unlinked it's auto-saving mechanism, somehow...right?

Anyway, that's my theory. The lost data is really just a repeat
half-hour, doing it over again, but this time I moved the Quicken data
file on to the desktop and it seems to know how to back itself up now.

Different. Sorry that was my windows heritage speaking. In Quicken for
OS X [which I'm not sure is the same as yours, although I have 2002 as
well] it is Save A Copy that would do the same thing I am talking about.

Anyway I'm glad you fixed your problem.

Get OS X for your wife. It is now worth it. [10.2.6].
