As they were working fine the other day. I had done somecleanup of the hard drive that I store data files on - but on the root, not the directory that has the quicken files on them. Could I haveinadvertently deleted some odd file that Quicken needs to open files?

Maybe. Are your Quicken data files one level below the root? If so, you
may have deleted Q3.DIR. I have found that Quicken 2002 tends to place
this file one level above where the data files live. I have no idea why,
nor what purpose this file serves.

If you've ever done a backup, you probably have a backup copy of Q3.DIR
you could drop into place and see if it fixes the problem.
