First place to check is www.google.com, go to groups, go to
software.testing, search the newsgroup for your question. Often you will
find it has already been asked and answered.

Next, search the newsgroup for FAQ. A FAQ will probably give you
recommended books and web sites to reference.

My general recommended references are www.stickyminds.com and the SWEBOK
from www.swebok.org. You might also want to search for articles and book
by Cem Kaner. He has some pretty good beginner books.

I agree with the Kaner reference. I particularly recommend "Testing
Computer Software" by Kaner, Falk, and Nguyen, and "Lessons Learned in
Software Testing", by Kaner, Bach, and Pettichord.
