Anyone have success versioning binaries, specifically flash files
(.fla/.swf)?

Our team checks in a lot of flash files and it is making our
repositories grow huge. Pruning is not really a long term solution
for us as the scm tool does not handle it well. Are there any good
systems out there that handle binaries really well?

Thanks.

Chris

What SCM tool are you using and why does it not handle binary files
well?

Yes, the files are compressed and system we use is BitKeeper. It's
more of an issue for BK b/c it is a distributed system. However,
they've proposed a solution for us that should work. Thanks for the
input.

Flash is finally coming out with a command line compiler after MX.
That should alleviate the .swf problem. According to one of our flash
developers, flash was originally intended to generate disposable
files. I still think it's ridiculous they did not provide a CLI - it
would be insane to rebuild every flash asset by hand (through the GUI)
for each build!

That's the most efective space saver, as you can't generate deltas of binary files. You could probably get a tool like Clearcase to detect your binaries and automatically compress them (maybe even automatically choose the most effective compression method.).
