View Full Version : Oracle9iAS oc4j.jar and http-web-site.xml on Solaris8

I'm trying to install Oracle9iAS on Solaris 8 to try out an app.EAR
I've had supplied from someone.
I've messed about installing Oracle9iAS Enterprise through the
(runInstaller) "Oracle Universal Installer" and spent a certain amount
of time looking for an oc4j directory that was supposed to exist. Then
I spotted that I have to install "Oracle Container for J2EE" from the
Core Edition instead of the Enterprise Edition. (Why doesn't
Enterprise come with this?!!). Fine - I did that too.
Then I find that the area that the Core Edition builds is named
"J2EE_containers" and not oc4j.... but I'm going to assume that these
are the same things. Right?
Right.. now... my installation instructions state that I need to"java
-jar oc4j.jar -install" from ocj4/j2ee/home... firstly does anyone
know what this does?... secondly - my Solaris install does not have an
oc4j.jar file... and looking around I've seen similar instructions
stating that they use "java -jar orion.jar -install"... is orion.jar
the same thing (perhaps a Solaris version)?
... Then my install instructions say I should look at http-web-site.xml
in the oc4j/j2ee/home/config directory. I don't have an
http-web-site.xml file. Where is this file supposed to be - and/or
where does it come from? Does Solaris use this file?
Then my instructions tell me to deploy the EAR using "java -jar
oc4j.jar" (a.k.a. "java -jar orion.jar"?).. which when run throws out
an error stating "Error unpacking: IO Error: error in opening zip
file" "Fatal Error: Transaction log file
(...oc4j/home/persistence/transaction.stat) did not exist and was not
possible to create....". Is this an error because of my installation,
my orion.jar/oc4j.jar issue, or something else.
Lots of problems. Any ideas?
Thanks

Ok - I've now given up with Oracle9iAS and I'm looking at OracleAS 10g
(still on Solaris 8).
I've run through the installation instructions that "came with it" and
I've installed the Infrastructure Tier in my
/oracle/AppServer/9.0.4.0.0/Infra directory using the oracle unix
login.. and that directory now looks like ....

I've even - regardless of how hard the installation instructions tried
to stop me - been able to get the "Welcome to Oracle Application
Server" home page up using the http://mymachine.mydomain.local:7777
url. Amazing! I was also able to locate the mysterious "Getting
Started After Installing Oracle Application Server" section of the
documentation after many failed Google and Metalink searches (found in
http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10464_01/core.904/b10376/toc.htm)
But now when I try to use OC4J (Oracle Containers for Java) I'm still
running into problems. Firstly - 10g seems to call the directory /j2ee
on Solaris - although the documentation I've been seeing around the
web calls it /oc4j... but regardless of that - the documentation seems
to loose me here.... if I follow the b10376/toc.htm item (above) down
further it starts going into Windows configuration discussions.
All I want to do at this point is install an EAR into the AppServer -
but if I run "java -jar oc4j.jar -install"
I get the following error...
Error reading config: Error instantiating default application at file:
/oracle/AppServer/9.0.4.0.0/AppServ/j2ee/home/config/application.xml:
Constructing UserManager for default:caught
oracle.security.jazn.JAZNRuntimeException
Can anyone point me in the direction of some unix specific
documentation on what to do next?
Many thanks

You are confusing the standalone edition of OC4J with an entire OracleAS
installation.
Your starting point for OC4J only should be:
http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/java/oc4j/index.html
Download the software at:
http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/ias/htdocs/utilsoft.html
Note the small download. Unzip it, and it runs within minutes - no
installer and long install process needed! The 'java -jar...' command you
executed belongs to this kind of release, not to what you have running now.
