View Full Version : Moving account from Property/Debt to Investing- Q2004

As I slowly begin to learn the nuances of Q2004D, I've found one
aspect puzzling.
I have a number of accounts (401k, education IRA, traditional IRA,
etc.) that show up in the Property/Debt center that I want to move to
the Investing center. I moved my 401k successfully and Q knew to make
an entry in the property/debt account to zero it out.
However, I couldn't figure out how to make the same scenario play out
with the education IRAs nor the traditional IRA. I end up with new
investment accounts but the old accounts under property/debt still
show (unless I tell Q to not show them). But that's a bandaid on the
problem and I'd like to know the steps to properly show these
accounts.
Is there a simple and easy solution that I have overlooked which will
fix this?
TIA.

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for but in Q2003 Dlx in Accounts
List (under Tools or ctrl-A) there is a Manage Accounts tab that lets you
manipulate Account orders and Groupings. Also, if you Edit an Account, you
have some ability to re-characterize it's Type.
Note, however, that Quicken Help says that, for the most part, once an
Account has been setup it's Type cannot be changed (there are a couple of
exceptions). Edit some Account and then go into Help or go into General Help
(F1) and search for account type.

In QP2004, you can right-click the accounts bar and then choose Add/Delete
Accounts in Quicken. This brings up the Account List, where you can select
an account and choose "Change Group." However, there's no option to change
a Property/Debt account to an Investment account. The only option I get is
to change Property/Debt to Cash Flow. As another poster said, options for
reclassifying accounts are limited.

Margaret

Probably you'll have to set up new IRA accounts and import the
transactions from the old accounts.

Folks,
Thanks for all the thoughts. I haven't had time to play anymore since
I posted the question.
I wish I could remember what I did when I created the first account.
Somewhere in the process, it asked me what account to take the funds
from and I indicated the proper account that showed up under the
Property/Debt center. I think I had a few too many interruptions and
by the time I got around to working with the other accounts, I had no
idea what I'd done to make the first one go. And maybe I'm doing the
same thing as before, but don't have the option for draining one
account to fund another for some reason.
I was hoping that I posted enough info that someone would recognize
what I'd done/was trying to do and could rescue me. I'm not trying to
change the type, but creating a new account to replace the old one
since the old ones are coming up under the wrong center (education IRA
for example showing under Property/debt rather than investment). Or
maybe I've just confused myself looking at the new layout and trying
to place accounts where I think they should show.
I'll play some more and see if I can figure it out.
