[Quicken 2003 Deluxe]
Here is some more information regarding posts within the last several months
about the "Can't Open File" error message....
I recently added a 120-GB hard-drive (NTFS) to my machine to serve as a data
drive. My OS (HP Home) is still on my original 10-GB drive (FAT).
- When an Administrator (ie., me) runs Quicken on my machine, the
Administrator can open a Quicken file regardless on which drive the file is
located, and regardless of the formatting (NTFS or FAT).
- When a non-administrator runs Quicken, they can only open the file if
stored on the older drive (FAT). If I change the non-administrator account
to be an Administrator, they can open the file on either FAT or NTFS.
(I checked the Attributes on the data files and the archive bit was set on
both.)
This is frustrating because I would like both Quicken data files to be on
the newer NTFS drive, and to be able to use my older drive as the backup
drive. I am not interested in making the other user an Administrator.
Comments or suggestions?

I don't use NTFS, so this would just be a guess; but it sounds
like something to do with folder/file permissions. I think that
by default, administrators are granted greater access to
files/folders; not having an NTFS partition, I can not do much
to verify this theory.
Also just curious: is the Quicken program on the NTFS drive?

You're correct, John, Administrators have permission to all files/folders in
NTFS.

John,
Quicken is installed on my FAT drive. I checked the security, and cannot
find anything to make me feel non-Administrators cannot access it. I'm
using XP Homes.

Reset it and it will probably work.
