View Full Version : Problems with installing PSC 750 software/drivers

Hello,

I just replaced the HDD on my Dell Inspiron laptop. All drivers
installed according to the web instructions. All diagnostics pass. I
tried to install the HP PSC 750 software again. At first, I just
popped in the CD and didn't get the message about installing the
software before connecting the printer. So it didn't work.
Specifically, after rebooting, the HP setup software didn't start up
again and finish the install. After visiting the HP website, I
uninstalled all components that got installed by the process, erased
all files, and removed all registry entries (none of the components
mentioned in the HP website appeared in the registry, but I did set
the security settings as recommended).

The problem is that the reinstall process doesn't change despite
following all the setup instructions. These include removing all
possible components from the system tray, such as antivirus, firewall,
and instant messaging. What happens after the files get copied and
the registry entries get entered is that I am asked to reboot. The HP
software still doesn't continue installing after a reboot. What
happens is that Windows 2000 detects new hardware and the standard
process of locating the proper drivers ensues. Specifically, I am
asked to specify the location. Well, I can't find the drivers....I
have no idea where they are. If I choose to select the location, I
initially tried selecting drive D (the CD drive) and navigating to
d:\drivers\win2000, etc.. The type being searched for is fixed at
"*.inf", and there no such file in the win2000 directory. There is,
however, an hpoipr07.dll, but I'm not sure what to do with it. I've
seen web pages about installing dll files in the registry, something
done usint regsvr, but in my judgement, doing that without knowing
what is going on (and without knowing what HP intended to do with
hpoipr07.dll) is not a good idea.

Instead of specifying the driver location, I also asked to be shown
the known drivers. None looked like drivers for an HP PSC 750.

I also found my way to some kind of installation process (can't
remember how I did it), but I had the choice of selecting a printer
manufacturer from a list on the left, and a printer model from a list
on the right. I chose HP on the left, but there was no PSC type
printer on the right. The closest was probably office jet, but again,
I didn't want to choose incorrect settings without knowing what I'm
doing.

The HP website has a new 47MB driver installation program for the PSC
750, but I haven't gotten my modem to work just yet (it is only
28kbps, and it drops the line every 6 minutes). So if possible, I'd
like to get the current installation program working. It came with
the printer.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Fred
