View Full Version : graphs over time desired

I have enjoyed the many types of reports Quicken 2002 Deluxe has provided
me. Now I'm generating them in Quicken Premier 2004 for Home & Business.

My favorite reports for investment purposes render income, and average
annual return (i.e, IRR). What I'd *really* like to do is to plot a
selected few of those parameters over time, in a line-graph. I have not
observed that this sort of thing is possible in Quicken.

For example, I'd like to plot IRR over a period of two years, as it changes
daily. I'd like to plot the S&P 500 Index on the same worksheet, so I can
compare my investment skill (uh, I mean luck) against a market average. I'd
like to plot my income in a similar comparison study.

Is any such time-plot available in Quicken?
Is there a way to export daily IRR numbers, for each day in the last year,
so that I might import them into a spreadsheet?

Thanks,
John

Are you able to get IRR in an investment report for several securities
with different purchase dates?

Yes. Quicken is superb at generating IRR for all kinds of situations (read,
"accounts"). You can change time periods ad nauseum. I believe Quicken
refers to IRR as "average annualized return." So, you see, some of the
terminology is different, but the "goods" are there.
In this regard, Quicken is vastly superior to any spreadsheet.
Quicken has any number of very useful, "canned" reports. I think the one
that renders IRR is called "performance."
You can read more in the Quicken Help screen.

Any IRR report, if it's worth a hoot, can handle "different" acquisition
dates. That's what you pay for when you buy financial reporting software.
To do this in a spreadsheet would drive you crazy.
An IRR program, by definition, processes dividends, re-purchases, and other
transactions that happen mid-term.

The reason I ask is that I'm unable to do this in Q2004 Premier. Two
or more securities with a date range of "include all dates" or
"earliest to date" and I get NA under Avg Annual Return. The only way
I can get the IRR numbers is to change the date range so it starts at
least one day after the purchase of the security.

Just checking to see if your Q2004 is working differently...

Using Q4 Premier H&B, I get IRR beautifully. I am inspecting only YTD (year
to date) at this time. However, there are many transactions, including
purchase, etc., within the time period.
I expect there is some sort of mathematical anomaly in your more extended
calculation...(duh)...but perhaps you can find it if you manipulate your
time periods until you isolate a narrow enough time window to spot the
anomaly?

No problem with YTD returns. The problem occurs when attempting to
get the IRR percentage for the total period of ownership. As far as I
know, the only way to do this for two or more securities is to select
"earliest to date" or "include all dates" - but each of these options
produces NA in the IRR column for all the securities in the report.

Incidentally, I'm upgrading from DOS version 8, which handles this
situation with no problems.

You're probably in for a culture shock!

You're probably in for a culture shock!

No kidding! :)

Unfortunately, the worst part of the shock is going from a program
that worked flawlessly to Q2004 with all its bugs...
