please help me out there!

I have just bought a HP Pavillion for my daughter to take to University
tomorrow, and we are having a major problem

When it goes into standby (eg by closing the lid) I cant get it to come out
of standby-only by depressing the On/off switch until it powers down

Anyone can help?

Under the power set up (right click on desktop-properties-screen
saver-power) you then set the mode as to what action you want to take
when the laptop is closed/open) I leave my system to stay connected.
if I use the hibernation I have to hold the power key button for a few
seconds in order for it to resume.
