I am getting the "CPU Fan Error" on boot. I diabled the Fan Speed
check in Bios. I am going to replace the System Fan but I can't take
the box down for very long. I can't take it out and go to the shop
with it in hand. Does anyone know a specific Replacement? I'm looking
for a heavy duty Fan that will snap right in the Fan Duct in place of
the old one?
Thanks,
B

Okay, I had a simliar problem, and I am posting here for the world to
know

a) How to fix this issue and
b) What a BIG LARGE STEAMING PILE OF DUNG HP is as a company.

A bit of background... I was working on an HP Pavilion 504n.
However, I have seen numerous problems also posted on many, many other
models of HP, all based on the Trigen Glendale motherboard. One issue
I've found VERY common (and the one that happened to me) is people
downloading the BIOS update from HP's site. DO NOT DO THIS EVER
UNLESS INSTRUCTED TO DO SO BY HP. I learned my lesson well. Why on
EARTH they put a BIOS up there which corrupts at least some of their
motherboards is beyond me. Anyhow, I upgraded the BIOS and I had two
results. First, the machine gave the very annoying CPU Fan error and
immediately shut down. If I hit F2 to bypass this and get through to
bootup, I was able to log into the system, which I had installed XP
Pro on, but now Audio Drivers could not be found that would run the
piece of crap sound on the piece of crap motherboard.

After exhaustive searching I finally found a driver that would work
for the motherboard. It was made for a totally different motherboard
by a different company, but whatever - it works.

THANK GOD someone posted this on the internet, 'cause HP is too
damned bloody annoying to do something as helpful as posting working
AUDIO DRIVERS on their own website.

To the more annoying problem of the CPU fan setting.... that is just a
false alarm. Your fan is fine, your motherboard is fine. The BIOS is
hosed and giving you a bad reading. After bypassing the shutdown via
F2... you normally hit F1 to go into BIOS setup. DO NOT DO THIS.
Instead, hit F11 to get into BIOS setup. This will give you advanced
capabilities, including the ability to go into settings that let you
TURN OFF the CPU FAN detector. @%#!#$#$@%@%# annoying, but it worked
for me.

Interesting thing is, the whole bloody mess can be fixed by 1) HP
removing the problematic BIOS update from their site, or specifying
CLEARLY what situation they would want you to use it... as clearly it
hoses other people's machines. 2) If they insist on leaving the
bloody wrong BIOS up there, they could also put the OLD BIOS up there
for people who have to downrev!!!! What kills me is they used to have
it up there... I at least saw one reference to a glend315.exe that
used to be on their own ftp site, but they removed it. @$%@$#@#$!$
When I wrote to customer support, they told me to take the entire PC
to an HP shop for repair. YEAH? Well you can take any and all future
HP products that I will never buy, and shove them where the sun don't
shine.

HP = the devil. Dell ain't perfect, but they sure do look a whole lot
better in comparison.
