Why does quicken fail to recognize entries with splits when I download
information from my bank account? These entries don't appear in the list
when I try to manually match either.

Robert,
I need more information. Is this for a checking account? If so, the check
number needs to be the same.

Steve,
No check number. It's a direct deposit.

Can you give some more information. I'm not clear on what exactly is
happening. Are the amounts exactly the same for the entry in your register
vs. the downloaded transaction?

Mike,
Right. I've already got the same amount entered as that which is
downloaded. When I try to match manually, that which I've entered doesn't
even show as a deposit. The only difference between the two is that the
deposit that I've already entered is a split entry. I'm wondering if it is
failing to show because of the "gross amount" with the deductions being
listed in the split. The net is the amount that isn't appearing when I try
to match the download.

Can we assume that you are downloading the deposit of your
paycheck? And that the amount in the downloaded transaction
matches the amount in the "Deposit" column of your Quicken
account register?
I do this every 15 days or so and Quicken has no problem
matching a downloaded paycheck transaction to one with splits in
the register. One thing it won't do though is match to a
transaction dated later than the downloaded transaction. I have
Q2002 deluxe for Windows, US.
(FWIW: The subject of your post is a bit misleading because
Quicken has an account "reconciliation" feature which has
nothing to do with matching downloaded transactions).

I think some of the problem has to do with how the register entry
was made. Assume an entry to checking on 9/15/03 for $50 to pay
Verizon.
1. If this payment is entered via a copy/paste from the reconciled (R)
8/15/03 entry, and modified to change the amount, date and R status,
it probably won't match, because the R is not deleted (I think) for
purposes of the matching routine.
2. Similarly, if the payment is entered via a scheduled transaction or
memorized transaction, and the scheduled or memorized transaction
was initially set up by using and modifying a reconciled transaction (R),
it probably won't match.
To correct, say, a scheduled transaction, try creating a fresh
transaction to Verizon123 for $50. Schedule the transaction, delete
the old scheduled transaction, then change the new scheduled
transaction from Verizon123 to Verizon.
