CD-ROM Drivers?

I have an HP Pavilion model 8756c. Recently I am unable to access the CD
drives. (The failure is probably related to recently running a defrag and
disc-cleanup.) When I go to Device Manager is see two drives listed - LG
CD-ROM CDR-8483B and Mitsumi CR-4804TE. There is an icon - a yellow circle
with an exclamation point - next to each device. If I click on the item and
go to properties is see a message - "Windows cannot load the device driver
for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing". There is a
troubleshooting feature available that guides me through uninstalling and
reinstalling the device. That didn't work. I also notice that, in that
properties dialog box, there is a list of the drivers. I can find the
drivers in the directory so I don't understand why they are not available.

Can you help me understand what has failed and what I need to do to correct
the problem?

I think I would go into Device Manager and delete the CD drives. Then reboot
and see if XP autodetects them and installs working drivers.

Evidently you installed XP yourself, as Windows ME was the original. Did you do
a fresh install or an upgrade? If the latter, XP inherited all the registry
garbage that had accumulated in the ME environment... Ben Myers

Yes, I installed XP myself.

A little history on my problem...I lost the connection to my CD drives.
That is, in My Computer I couldn't see the CD drives and no applications
would recognize them. This may (probably) happened when I tried to use a
third-party burner software for the first time since upgrading to XP. I
read a MS KB article that said this could/would happen upon upgrade. The
article said to make a registry mod to correct the problem. I did it and it
did! The CD drives returned but the CDR is not recognized as a write device
(it originally was). If you have any suggestions I would appreciate them.

different partition (aka drive)? Or did you install Windows XP on top of
the older OS? If the latter, this causes problems like you are having.

Windows XP has its own CD burning software built in. When it is working,
all you do is drag files over to the burner. Then when done, select
write or try to eject and then Windows XP will warn you about it hasn't
been written to yet.

Oh David... That is a bad thing to do. And over time, Windows will
almost always get more and more unstable after time installing a newer
Windows over an older one. If there isn't anyway really worth saving on
that partition, then I highly recommend that you reinstall Windows XP
with the option of wiping out the old Windows.

Well on the other hand, you have important stuff on that partition and
then we have a real problem here. Although let me know, as it gets
complicated to explain. Be warned! If you wipe the old one out, you need
all of your install disks for your applications and stuff. And you might
also need Windows XP drivers for the modem and the sound card. Other
drivers too, but these two are the ones generally needed first if you
need any at all. So think about this very carefully first before doing
anything!
