Okay... The crackpots at HP are no help, so lets see if anyone here
can help. My HP has the 5 n 1 Media reader which is based on the Texas
Instruments PCI-1620 Cardbus controller.

Here's the thing. With a fresh install of XP (SP1), and all drivers,
the media reader will work fine. However, as soon as you install
DirectX 9, it tries to redetect the reader, and gives the error
"Driver not intended for this platform."

I have the latest drivers from the HP site, and even a couple of
drivers that were not for this laptop, but for that controller. HP's
answer is either do without DirectX 9, or do without the reader, as
there is no hardware problem, so they wont do anything.

Any help would be appreicated!
