Hello.

I wonder if there are tools to control a HP autoloader 418 from the shell.
I can write my data to the drive with tar or whatever, but having an
autoloader but changing tapes manually can't be the intended
way of operation. :)

I would even write my own tools if I would know what SCSI commands to
use to operate the loader.

Thanks,
Mike

From *which* "shell", i.e. which OS? (This is comp.sys.hp.hardware,
not .hpux, so your OS isn't neccessarily HP-UX.)

If HP-UX, then seen the mc(1) manual page.

If this is HP-UX, you will also need to add the appropriate drivers to
the kernel, if they are not already there - sctl, schgr, stape.

mtx is also a nice tool.

Whoops, sorry. Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD.

I think mtx is freeware. But binaries should also be available
