View Full Version : Laptop video problems after updating

If it ain't broke, don't fix it! I'll try to remember that the next
time.
I have a Thinkpad T22 running Win2K. No problems whatsoever. I decided
to do a "Windows update". I installed IE6 (SP1), Win2K SP4, some
security updates and an S3 Graphics "software update" dated 1/22/03.
Upon restarting after everything was installed, the video resolution
had been reset to 640x480. When I tried to set it back up to 1024x768,
I got a series of error messages stating that it couldn't be done.
(The video driver is S3 Graphics / IX 1014.)
I went to IBM's support pages and down-loaded the proper driver from
there and installed it. It turned out to be the exact same driver
(same name - same version number - same date). But, instead of giving
me an error message, I get a BSOD when I click on <Properties> to try
to change the settings. The BSOD screen shows a message referring to
VGA.DLL but it displays for only about 2 seconds and then
automatically re-boots.
I've discovered that if I "un-install" the driver (from the Device
Manager), it seems to default back to an older driver (S3 Savage/IX)
that works ok but provides only 800x600 resolution and only 16 colors.
I don't know where to go from here. Any suggestions as to what the
problem might be?
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

I had not thought of the BIOS being out-of-date. So, I just updated it
(from version 1.00a to 1.11). Unfortunately, it made no difference
whatsoever.
I'll try updating the service pack again as well as the video driver
itself.
If anyone has any other ideas I'd appreciate hearing them.

Has anyone here successfully installed the Savage IX8 video driver
update (ver 7.90.50) on their IBM Thinkpad T22 laptop?
I did this a couple of weeks ago and have not yet gotten the video
display to work properly (see original post below). I've re-downloaded
and re-installed the update several times. I have updated the BIOS.
The symptoms are still the same: the driver crashes to a BSOD if I try
to set the video properties. By uninstalling the driver and defaulting
to the VGA driver the unit is useable but displays only in 16 colors
with a max resolution of 800 x 600. Plus, it seems to re-install
itself after a re-boot.
I've posted on IBM's "support forum" but got no response (I see they
are shutting down that forum anyway).
The unit is out of warranty. I don't know where to go with this. Any
advice?
