Is it possible to use a 160 GB hard drive with Windows 98 SE ?
I'm using XP at the moment, but am getting sick of it as things are
continuosly going wrong.
Before I reinstall, I'm looking into other options.

If you use the BIOS extension that is usually packaged with the drive it should
work fine.

In the end, I had to go to Microsoft and download a patch for the
atapi.sys file, which is something to do with hard drives. I had to
install it manually, as the installer didn't seem to want to work.
For those who doubt that this actually happened (and there are some
who seem to be blaming magical elves, or something) here's a site I
found (God Bless google...) that explains the cause.

In my case, it was crashes that led to the problem, as opposed tot he
hibernate cause.
"If you have or support systems with ATA hard drive sizes exceeding
137 GB running any version of Windows XP or XP with Service Pack
1—Home, Professional, Media Center Edition, Tablet PC Edition, or
64-bit Edition—you may be at risk from a flaw in the operating system.
This flaw may become apparent when the system enters
Hibernation/Standby mode or after a memory dump is written out to the
disk."

Replying to my own post, sorry.
I got mixed up between this and another newsgroup, where I first went
to help when I started losing data from a new 160 GB drive with XP.
Anyway, I've installed the patch, and reformatted the drive into 2
partitions.
It's got 1 week to perform propery, or it's going back and getting
swapped for a 120 GB drive.
