I cannot get a machine to boot off a ghosted drive (I transfered the
FAT16 2GB drive image from a 6.xGB drive to a 20GB - Norton Ghost 6.0
drive to drive option). Details:
- The machine will not start up Windows 3.11 on the 20GB drive, and
will not even start up from a win98se floppy bootdisk when the drive
is connected.
- It will start up from the floppy when the 6.xGB drive is connected.
- The Phoenix Technologies Bios does recognize the 20GB drive,
claiming it to be an 8GB drive.
I just bought a drive on ebay that is 3.2 GB and I am hoping that will
solve my probs. FYI: This puter runs a Focus Ion Beam Mill and has
some cards that cannot be placed on a modern computer.
Can anyone give me ideas on what to look at, or why the new drive
won't boot?
The computer is a PE5000HX (Texas Micro Systems, Inc.)
Current Bios installed is 5b.1.1b, and below the release notes:
Core [PE5000HX] Changes
---------- -------------------------------------------------------------
x5a.0.7b * Initial/Beta test release (TexM setup engine)
x5b.1.0a * Moved to Phoenix4.05b core/Future BIOS's will be 4.05b
based
* QNX install floppy boots
x5b.1.0b * Switch3 code updated
* [97/02/25] Switch 3 code updated (again)
* [97/02/25] Setup: System BIOS was shown as '????'
x5b.1.0c * Switch3 code cleaned up internally
* Warm boot forces EISA/PCI bus resets
* Copyright and company name updated
x5b.1.0d * Type-C DMA fix
* Eliminate 'Previous Boot Incomplete' message during POST
x5b.1.1 * IRQ12 can be assigned to PCI devices
* Able to boot without keyboard attached
x5b.1.1a * Corrects a memory sizing error
* Quickly determines how many IDE devices are attached
- Bug: PS/2 mouse does not work
x5b.1.1b * PS/2 mouse fix
* EISA-PCI latency timer is configurable within CMOS Setup
x5b.1.1c * Force a full reset when exiting from CMOS Setup
TIA,
Spacey

Do you know what date the Bios was made on? Because this looks like
the bios here may not support a 20 Gb Hard drive.

If this is the actual date of when your Bios was released, then it
might be too old to be able to recognize that the Hard Drive is a 20
gig. You may have to get a new motherboard or flash your Bios.
They usually have a BIOS extension shipped with these drives that lets them
work on an old machine. I have MaxBlast running on this old Aptiva and it seems
OK. It will get you going until you get your BIOS fixed anyway.

Oh well... didn't get to try. I got the 3.2Gb drive in this weekend
and it worked like a charm.
