The problem is solved - last night we did a complete reinstall of the
W2K system on the new hardware (i845 processor board) and the
whole thing works like a charm, including the applications. W2K use the
APIC, the Dialogic ISA boards work without a hitch, even without the
IRQ5 being reserved in the BIOS - and of course the system is significantly
faster than the old i440BX, as it should be.
The morale is: when you change the processor board (chipset + BIOS),
even to a newer model from the same manufacturer, do reinstall Windows
from scratch. Don't skip the reinstall just because the old Windows
essentially boot on the new hardware...
The problem is related to the Windows HAL - a "Standard PC" HAL won't
be able to completely master an ACPI-based system and, reportedly,
even an ACPI HAL installed on a particular chipset is not guaranteed to
morph well to a different chipset.
