View Full Version : enslaving a Maxtor 72700AP

I have a Maxtor Model 72700AP hard drive that I would like to add as
a second hard drive to a PC. On the drive, it has some information such
as the number of heads and cylinders and sectors and also it says
that jumper J50 when on makes it a master and when off makes it a
slave.

Formerly, this hard drive resided in another PC as its sole hard drive.
There are some pins with jumpers on them connected as follows:

. ._. . .
|
. . . . .

i.e. the first pins in the 1st and 2nd rows are connected to each other
and the 2nd and 3rd pins in the 1st row are connected to each other.

How do I have to modify the jumpers to make this hard drive function as
a slave?

There is a ribbon cable which connects to the hard drive already resident
on the PC I want to install this new drive on. The connector at the end
of the ribbon cable connects to the hard drive already there. There is
a connector in the middle of the cable and I think I'm supposed to connect
it to the new hard drive. Unfortunately, the connector fits the pins
with either orientation, i.e. it still fits if I flip it over. I don't
know how to choose the proper orientation.

Are you real sure about the model number. Maxtor never heard of it.
I'm assuming that the 4th pin from the left in the top row is missing.
Then if so,
remove the vertical jumper and store it next to the horizontal jumper.
Move
the existing if you have to. The pins on top are all tied together.

Ribbon cable fits with 'stripe' nearest power connector.

Mike.

It's an old HD. The manufacture date is 09-04-96, made in Singapore.
I copied the Model number correctly. There are some other numbers on it,
e.g. HDA/Uplevel 05P1, PCBA/Upevel 03A, Unique/Uplevel 07A, S/N A800VW8A,
G,Z,B, A52, 12V 200 mA or 5V 420 mA.

I'm assuming that the 4th pin from the left in the top row is missing.

Correct.

Thanks. Am I correct in thinking, based on what you write, that I only
really need one of the jumpers and that the other is a spare I can use
for other drives I would like to enslave?

In other words, is it sufficient merely to remove the vertical jumper and
put it in a drawer or on another HD or on a CDRW on another PC?

Both jumpers are unused. Take them off if you wish.
The data cable, as some one else said, goes with the
stripe towards the power connector( 4 pin rectangular).

(snip)

I see your question has been answered, but a useful utility for finding
jumper details for loads of makes and models of hard drives, including
the 72700AP and other oldies, is Seagate's Disk Wizard Lite.
It's free. Needs a couple of floppies which one boots to.
