View Full Version : Find out which RAM suits my unknown MoBo?

Hello,
I have a 200 MHz MoBo here with only 64 MB, no manual, no type
information etc. And I wanna expand the RAM to as much as possible.
All I know that I need some sort of DIMM module; how can I reliably
find out which RAM type I exactly need and which Size the mobo can
handle ?? Don't want to spend money for a RAM that's useless for me at
the end...
I didn't find a product ID on the mobo. Is there a diagnosis tool
telling me the exact mobo type? I guess having this information I
should find a manual or information on the web, right?
Thank you! And enjoy the weekend
Daniel

On boot-up, hit the "Pause/Break" key (top right) and copy down the BIOS string
at the bottom of the screen. It will often give useful info.
It it running Windows of some kind right now?

Download the Home Version and give it a try. It should be able to ID the board.

Put in whatever info you can. It occasionally comes up with the right one.

Text listings, click one for a new window with pictures and specs.

Same as above, but can show multiple MB pics at once.

Same as above, but also has little (Italian) popup ads and banners.

On the off-chance it's a PC-Chips board (like many other unmarked ones).
And there's always www.Google.com if there's any kind of markings at all.
Sometimes just a few letters/numbers can get you on track.
Usually I can bounce back and forth between various sites and eventually figure
out what old board I just scavenged from the used computer store's dumpster.

#1 tool to find these things out: www.hwinfo.com
use hwinfo32 for windows, and hwinfo for dos. it will spit out just
about everything you could want. type of ram, motherboard maker/cpu type
everything.
the only downside, is that it won't tell you what the upper limits of
the boards ram capabilities are :(
