Logitech mouse frequencies

i use a Logitech iTouch Keyboard (Y-RB6) and Logitech Cordless Wheel Mouse
(M-RK45). when i click the primary mouse button, WinXP sees multiple
clicks. i assume the button is dying so i want to replace the mouse. the
problem is that this mouse is unavailable and i'm really confused about
compatibility of other mice.

this kbd/mouse combo shipped with the Cordless Desktop (Dual) receiver
(C-RD3-DUAL) that says it uses 27.045 MHz (kbd) and 27.145 MHz (mouse).
there is a compatibility matrix on the Logitech web site (URL is given
below) that says most other mice use 27.045 MHz. if i get a standalone
mouse that has its own receiver and uses 27.045 MHz, is that going to
conflict with my cordless kbd receiver which claims to also use 27.045 MHz?
am i constrained to using *only* the mice listed as compatible with the
C-RD3-DUAL receiver if i want to keep using the same kbd? (this is a bit of
a problem because most of those compatible mice are either no longer
available or are right-handed and i mouse left-handed.) what if i get a
different brand of cordless mouse? do different maufacturers use different
frequencies?

Basically 27.x MHz is an open analog amateur band for remote
controlled devices. Anybody can use it. If you have two senders on
the same frequency, both are likely to have problems. There is no
channel-sharing, unlike in cable modems or mobile phones.

I have no idea whether the list by Logitech is complete or accurate.
Note however that some devices in this band have several frequancies
and can be switched. Otherwise they would be unusable for office use
where several people are working in closer proximity. (Wireless
KBDs and mice are also easily evasdropped on, but that is a different
problem.)

In principle there is also the option to re-tune these devices to
another frequency within the 27MHz band. If they are crystal based,
you just need to replace the crystals with a matching pair on a
different frequency. Crystal pairs are possibly available from shops
that sell remote controlls for model airplanes and the like. I have no
idea whether such a retuning is possible with Logitech equipment.

thanks. i am certain that my kbd and mouse are not user-configurable. but
you got me thinking and i went back to the Logitech web site where i found
info about device IDs so maybe that's how they implement sharing.

maybe i should just buy a new kbd/mouse combination. that's a shame since
the old kbd works fine, but it might be more certain to work correctly.
