View Full Version : Can a USB mouse be converted to a True PS2 ?

I have a USB mouse (optical) which I need to use through
a PS2 Port. Unfortunately when I connect the mouse with a
USB to PS2 adapter it doesn't work (although mouse is
recognized as HID-Compliant Mouse)

Setup : I have a single USB port on my laptop. I use a
USB to two PS2 converter to split the USB port into two
PS2 ports for a keyboard and Mouse. But my mouse is
USB, so I have to use a USB to PS2 for my mouse now.

At the end of the day, my USB mouse gets converted
to PS2 into the splitter, and then back to USB again into
the laptop. Is something wrong with this?

When I connect a true PS2 mouse everything is ok.
So I am curious how I can convert my USB mouse to a true PS2.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

You'll need an active converter, assuming there is such a
thing. The mouse itself must be a PS2 AND USB type to work
with a passive converter. Your best bet IMHO is to get a
small USB hub with 2 ports or perhaps even cheaper
get a PS2 mouse.

By reprogramming its firmware.

Seriously, the "adaptor" you use is merely a set of wires that re-routes
signals in a way that a pre-programmed mouse is EXPECTING. If the mouse is
not DESIGNED to function both as a PS2 and USB device, and is not used
with the wiring adaptor it is DESIGNED FOR, you are out of luck.

The mouse is PS2 compatible. Infact, It works with the PS2 adaptor
on a direct PS2 port. So that is very curious, that if USB to
PS2 adapters are just wire transforms, what could be the problem?
Could the PS2 adaptor somehow corrupting the singals of the USB
mouse? The adapter works just fine with pure PS2 mouse?

Is there a true pure PS2 optical mouse out there?

No, actually that is not enough. The interfaces are also
electrically incompatible. There are some special microcontrollers
that can 'speak' PS/2 and USB on the same signal lines.
