I have a 300GL into which I would like to install a larger hard drive.
But when I connect it the BIOS says that drive 0 is "Not installed".
Its a Seagate 180 MB, is it possible the drive is larger than
supported? Where can I find more info about what my motherboard
supports? I've checked the obvious things like the IDE connection, the
power, the master/slave jumper. Any other ideas? Thanks.

Check for BIOS updates. Drive size limits on mainboards are not
a hardware problem. You can also get a IDE contoller, like
the promise 100tx2. They bring their own BIOS. The 100tx2 supports
LBA48, i.e. some exabytes or so.
