View Full Version : Speakers and magnetic shielding

I have a new Creative 5.1 speakers set and have discovered that only the
satellites are magnetically shielded - reasonable I suppose, as these are
normally the only ones that need to be. However, because of my limited space
and certain necessities, I need my sub fairly close to my monitor. Well, I
suppose 'fairly' is subjective here as, and this leads me to my question, I
don't know what *is* a safe distance.
So, how far do non-magnetically shielded PC speakers need, at minimum, to be
placed from monitors and other stuff that suffers at the hands of magnetic
fields - like VCR's and tapes etc?
Thanks!

For the monitor, as soon as you see distrotion in the colors, it is
too close. Strong magnetic fields can bend the masks, so don't bring
the magnets closer, as such damage can be irrepairable.
For takes and floppies, keep them a reasonable distance away,
say >50cm. Magnetic fields decreade with distance raised
to the third potence, so only suff really near is at a danger.

Yes, I thought as much really. The sub-woofer is, say, 1 to 2 feet away from
a TFT LCD monitor - with no obvious/visual ill effects at all. It's also
about the same distance from an S-VHS VCR. Although it's the tapes inside
that I was thinking of, obviously - being S-VHS tapes, and not standard VHS
tapes, they are quite valuable to me and contain some important recordings.
Thank you for your advice, Sir.

Ah, sorry. LCDs are mostly immune to magnetic fields, only CRTs are
at risk and they are the reason for the shielding. An unshielded
speaker can really mess up the colors on a CRT becuase it has an
incluence on the elctron beam (3-finger rule). This influence can
get noticable from a relatively long distance (e.g. 1 foot). No
risk to the monitor at that distance, but the picture gets
messed up, sort of a "raibow" effect.
Also the CRTs produce color by use of a steel mask that also is
sensitice and can get bent in strong magnetic fields.

Don't worry at that distance.

You are welcome.
