Will a Bios update fix a USB problem?

I have Windows XP SP2 installed on an old computer, and I can't connect
any USB devices, windows won't reconize them.

In windows device manager I get the following error:
Intel(R) 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller. You
computers firmware does not have enough information for this device to
work properly. Code 35.

Would a Bios update fix this? Is there anyway to get a bios update
without paying $50 from esupport.com?

Unless a new bios fixes this it sounds like you can't fix it,

computer manufacturer to obtain firmware or Bios update. (Code 35)

Cause
This error message is displayed when a device does not have an entry in
the BIOS MultiProcessor Specification (MPS) table. You can only see this
error message on MPS-capable systems. This behavior usually indicates a
BIOS bug. This is particularly prevalent on MPS systems with multiple
root PCI buses.

Troubleshooting
•Obtain a firmware or BIOS update. If no update is available, you cannot
use the device.

•If the BIOS has an option to switch between MPS 1.1 and MPS 1.4, you
can try switching because a different table is loaded. You usually want
the system set to MPS 1.4.
