A direct copy of what?
Two possibilities:
1. You are copying audio and the reader's DAE performance cannot keep up.
2. You do not have DMA enabled for the devices, thus there is an IDE
bottleneck.

No need to shout!
The holdup is in the DAE, which is the complicated bit of any audio copying
process. Try ripping the disc to the hard drive, with both the CDROM drive
and the Writer and see which is faster. Writing from the hard drive on
compatible media should be somewhat faster!

Sorry about the caps..............there is one thing that I did when I
replaced the old burner.............the old burner (HP) was jumpered to the
cs (cable select) and I used this jumper in lieu of the slave.

Graham
I tried the ripping to the HD with the cdrom and this didn't help but just
using the burner helped alot.........down to a total of about 5 minutes for
560mb so it appears that the problem is with the cd rom? It's a 32x and
about 3 years old.
